Gandhi was a wonderful, inspiring leader of the Indian Congress Party, who led the country of India with peaceful resistance. He believed that Hindus and Muslims should share an independent India. Before India was an independent country, Britain controlled finance, law and order in the country. He declared independence for India in 1930. He protested in many different ways; however, the most affective one was called the Salt March which was to protest the British tax on salt. He walked 240 miles to the ocean to gather salt, thousands followed him and it became a powerful movement. The Salt symbolized Indians independence, and the outcome of this march drew support all across India and the rest of the world.
