In the 20th century women and African American's in the United States were treated unequally; African Americans were segregated from society and women were looked down on. In 1955, Matin Luther King was the unofficial leader of the black protest movement which they advocated peaceful demonstrations. He is most famous for his "I have a dream" speech in 1963 that touched almost everyone in the country. President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Bill which allowed the government to cut off any funding to programs that practiced discrimination. Malcom X's started race riots - leader of the Black Panther Party- attempted to stop segregation. Despite the right to vote their were still differences in education and pay. The first woman elected head of state in Europe was Margaret Thatcher, following her was Indira Ghandi as being the first female president in India. This brought the world out of that state of mentality and it was the beginning of the equal women's rights. With the invention of birth control, women had the choice whether or not to have a family; this was a huge change in society and the Catholic church were extremely against this. Then women gain equal pay, which brought women to have more opportunities in jobs. Since the 1960's, African Americans and women gained many new rights in the United States.
