In 1952 the United Nations condemned the apartheid system, they tried to organized economic sanctions against S.A however many leading nations refused to participate. Then in the 1980's they declared aparthied to be a crime against humanity. The pass laws were to control the movement and employment of the blacks; they were forced to carry "reference books" of identity papers just as like the Jews were forced to wear the star of Davis. 
Nelson Mandela became the leader of the African National Congress. In 1960 the blacks formed outside a police station to protest the pass laws, in response the police opened fire and killed 67 demonstrators. After this the SA government passed a law where police could arrest without warrant. In 1964, Nelson Mandela was arrested and put to jail for life. Another Massacre occurred in 1976 that was because black students protest against being educated in Afrikaans. After this tragic Massacre  civil disobedience, strikes, boycotts and even more violent measures continued and increased. In 1978 the Prime Minister P.W. Botha made reforms, that allowed the blacks marry whom they pleased and other rights. In 1990 Mandela was released fomr prison and four years later the democratic election with all races took place.
